What is a Dipole?

A dipole consists of two conductors fed in the center. Thanks to its predictable impedance and broad radiation pattern, it remains an ideal choice for field operations.

Required Tools

  • Measuring tape or laser distance meter
  • Wire cutter and soldering iron
  • Lightweight insulators or 3D-printed center/end isolators
  • Feedline with a suitable balun or choke

Cutting the Elements

  1. Define your target frequency and calculate the wavelength.
  2. Apply the velocity factor based on your conductor type.
  3. Cut each arm to approximately one-quarter of the wavelength.

Field Tuning

Install the antenna away from nearby structures. Measure the SWR across the band. If resonance falls below the desired frequency, trim both arms. If it is above, add wire by folding it back or using extensions.

Deployment Tips

  • Elevate the center feed point to maintain a low takeoff angle.
  • Install a common-mode choke or a 1:1 balun to suppress feedline currents.
  • For multiband coverage, consider variants like the Inverted-V or the End-Fed Half-Wave.
